I play an Arcane/Frost blood elf mage on live, and I felt that I needed to re-create her to test out Arcane, so I have. Her name is Katarissa, and I quite like her. So, therefore, I’ve talented her up similarly to what I play in live (I’m not a good mage, btw, it’s more because I like the thought of a Blood Elf Arcane mage!)
The thought of an arcane familiar makes me squee with joy, I must confess. Anyway, I’m sent to speak with Meryl Felstorm. (He’s got a really cool backstory, check it out!) Meryl sends you to Violet Hold to deal with Kathra’natir.
It was a tough fight, I will admit that freely but I lived and didn’t die once, huzzah! It went even better once I realized I could spell steal his vampiric aura, hah. So you get the Forge of the Guardians from the Violet Hold and teleport it out. Once you’re out, you’re in the Hall of the Guardian which is a place where the Council of Tirisfal would meet. Meryl tells you to pick an artifact to pursue…
Arcane’s is Aluneth. I pick my shiny future Arcane staff and let Meryl know I’m ready to go kick some ass. To start however, I start by finding some scrolls in the same hall?
Well, mages are scholars, I suppose. So, you give the scrolls to Meryl and then he tells you we get to find a staff and bind the staff to ourselves. Whee?
I’m sent to speak with Kalec, on the council of the Six, and he tells me to go check out the Azure Dragonshrine in Dragonblight. Okidoki Mr Former Aspect!
I teleport myself to Old Dalaran, and end up going to the Azure Dragonshrine. From there I can see lots of void critters, and some portals. Something fishy is going on here… time to investigate. After finding a few clues, and I go to the last clue it’s pretty obvious who is behind this all – the Ethereals! Starting up a communicator I start to chat with Nexus-Prince Bilaal, who goes on about his great plan to utilize the void power they’re managing to consume to become Void.
Void isn’t a good thing. I need to stop him, and dammit, he has my staff.
He’s hiding out in the Nexus Vault, plundering artifacts left right and centre, so it’s time to go to Coldarra and stop him.
I head to Coldarra and do some scouting for Kalec. He then tells me that I need to absorb a bunch of arcane energy and I can do this by drawing from rifts or killing things. I do both, and he tells me that I now need to destroy some surge needles… with my HOLY energy. What the heck?
I go around to the surge needles and sort them out and Azuregos begins to speak to me. Wait, Azuregos? The blue dragon that we killed for sinew back in Vanilla? Ohhh this is going to be good. I go into the nexus and start to kill some illusionary mana wyrms and Ethereals and free Azuregos from the bondage they have him under. He turns into a pretty dishy High Elf (with nice horns!) and together we go through the Nexus.
Using Blink a lot over ground that we need to avoid, along with killing mobs we make our way into where Grand Magus Telestra is – the Librarium. The Echo of Aluneth is causing a surge in arcane energy and we must destroy it.
Once that’s done, we head into the rift itself, but Nexus-Prince Bilaal has managed to get himself turned into a void god (using the model of Xhul’horac from Hellfire Citadel, of course. Such a good model!) I land on his platform after Azuregos gives me a lift across, and wait like a good little girl for Time Warp to come back off cooldown.
I do that, and I kill Bilaal, even though he likes to push me off the edge a few times – but gravity has my back, or something, and I get ported back up. I enter a place called “The Beyond” which is in the Nexus Vault and I grab the staff.
The staff doesn’t like it, so I take some damage for a bit, before it calms the heck down and lets me have it. Hrmph.
I come out, and Azuregos goes “I’m impressed. Never have I seen a priest capable of controlling Aluneth” – what the hell Blizzard? Do you NOT have quality control? (Pretty sure that I’ll be back here when I start on the Discipline quest line.) I return to Kalec, he congratulates me, and then Meryl is all “Come back to the Hall!” Aye aye, cap’n!
I return and unlock the power of the staff, and oogle the different appearances. I go back to Meryl and he tells me that he knows of a street performer that would be able to teleport people in as we go, and that I need to bribe him to come with me (he’s a goblin, after all).
I bribe the goblin and he manages to break through all the wards and teleport into the Hall. Meryl tasks Akazamzarak with creating portals and a bunch of mages rock up. All the mages are keen to re-create the Tirisgarde, and I get a fancy new title. Then it’s time to get to work and start destroying the legion. I pick a zone and what’s this? A quest for my class hall!
It’s not fully complete, and I can’t even actually do anything with it, but we’re getting started on these slowly!
Arcane doesn’t seem that different to be frank. The whole ‘the more mana you have the more damage you do’ thing is no longer in play which I think will give Arcane a bit more freedom to really blow things up. All in all, I can see myself still playing my Katarissa.
Next up, as Frost isn’t in the game yet – Katali, the far more adventurous cousin of Fei Li, the “Firecracker”!
