Marksman hunters have changed in Legion in as much as they don’t have a pet anymore, taking away one of the core mechanics that have marked hunters since Closed Beta in Vanilla. Hunters are often times picked as an ‘easy’ class because of the pet, so I’m curious to see how Marksman will play without that added layer of security.
Here’s the talents for Marksman:
As you can see I’ve picked Black Arrow, Farstrider, Exotic Munitions (take two… hah), Camouflage, Piercing Shots, Barrage and Lock and Load. I was tempted to take Dark Ranger, but I thought that instead of going for something that can sometimes taunt off me, I’d better learn to kite and/or concussive shot like a beast.
When I was creating this character I had a hard time picking a race – I knew I wanted an undead and gnome hunter, but I finally settled on a Blood Elf, and going with the concept of a Farstrider. So, Farstrider Katarine, let’s get this show on the road!
As before, you go around and find out about all the weapons that you can go after. The Marksman weapon is Thas’dorah, Legacy of the Windrunners. I feel even MORE justified in going with a Blood Elf for this now!
Our friend Emmarel did state that she had fought with the first Windrunner in repelling the Amani invasions. I found that a nice nod to history there. 🙂
I’m already intrigued by this questline – I’m heading down to the shore to assist Vereesa and the Farstriders in attempting to recover Alleria and the bow. The isle that you get dropped off on appears to be the same as the Blood DK area. Hrmm.
Vereesa admits that it’s very hard for her to actually come to a blood elf for help. I can’t say I blame her after all the bad history between Vereesa and the Horde. Vereesa is clearly going there after her sister, and the Blood Elf there is trying to get her to let him go with her, but she’s choosing me. The other thing I’ve noticed is that we’re heading back to the same world the Blood DK quest was on – and to play with the Demonic Inquisition.
Of course, Orestes, the Blood Elf who had been arguing with Vereesa, runs in. We run in after him and give chase.
I shoot at some demons, Vereesa helps me, I shoot at more demons and because a Marks hunter really isn’t meant to stand toe to toe with the bad guys, my health goes down.
Death Count: 1
Maybe I should go with the Dark Ranger talent…
I’ve gone with the Dark Ranger talent, and it’s actually really awesome. Undead boars, vultures, bone serpents, and wolf/dog things all spawn and come and help you and multiple can spawn at once. It’s also made it a bit easier for me to jump around and do things (like Feign Death/Camo – Camo heals… excellent clutch heal as I have no pots!)
You get to Orestes and he dies after you kill a miniboss. Now it’s on to find the Herald and kill him, as he apparently has Alleria.
So as you go forward, Vereesa runs ahead, and since she’s practically untouchable, I’m quite happy to let her murder a few mobs for me. We kill the Herald mini-boss and now it’s on to the High Inquisitor. So while we’re in the same place as the Blood DK it’s not exactly the same – thankfully!
So we get to the inquisitor and he summons these eyes that do fire or ice damage to you. I take him on the first go, and have to feign to get him to reset. 😦 then I take him on the second go – have to feign, think I’m ok but his eyes remain on me, bugger.
Death Count: 2
I’ve swapped some talents around, giving up Black Arrow, Exotic Munitions and Camouflage for True Aim, Trick Shot and Binding Shot – there’s just too many adds and I need a bit of help with the AOE. Third time is a charm yeah?
Not so much. I was doing exceptionally well actually, and then bam! He leashed! FFS. So, fourth attempt, and I got him! Binding Arrow was quite helpful here I thought.
You free Vereesa and go off trying to find out if Alleria’s still there and she’s not, but her bow is. So Vereesa tells you to take the bow and use it and bam! The bow is mine. Along with it a really cool quiver on my back! So I speak to Emmarel, and we go back to the Hunting Lodge (yay, I like the hunting lodge and all the lore figures there! :D)
I actually really like the two gnome hunters there too.
“Holy Gearshaft, is that Katarine with her artifact!” “It’s nice but can it tame a mechanical chicken? I think not!”
Ahh the amusement value. I really liked the Lore on the Marksmanship hunter quest – I thought it was great and an insight into Vereesa – not to mention how cool it was that we’re searching now for Alleria actively. I do think that I will be levelling a Blood Elf Hunter for sure, whether or not I boost it or not is something else entirely – I want to capture that ‘Farstrider’ sense that a Marks Blood Elf gives me. I also think that I will be able to play a hunter to max level now that I’ve got an RP/Lore background to do so.
Next up: Melee Hunters!?
