So, I’ve provided Blizzard with a massive bunch of suggestions about how to improve on the Shaman/Elemental Shaman artifact questline in Legion. Please excuse the stream of consciousness writing that this post contains – I was quite in the zone when writing it.
I’ve been playing around mostly with the different artifact quests and introductions since getting into the alpha and one of the things that keeps preying on my mind is the quality of the Elemental Shaman artifact quest, and parts of the ‘shared’ Shaman artifact quest as well. The first thing I wanted to try once I got into Alpha was the Elemental Shaman Artifact Quest, as I main an Ele and have since BC.
I was quite chagrined. “Is this it?” I thought. And it’s been on my mind for quite a few days, and tonight in the shower I started brain storming (hah, shower, storming… yeahhhh. I’ll see myself out :P)
First off, in the ‘shared’ portion of the artifact quest, I was really disappointed in the Earthen Ring. I get that they’re scattered after having been dealt a terrible blow at the Broken Isles but I think with a bit of tweaking, it could be a lot better. I mean, they couldn’t even think to use a flame shock?!
To start off with, have the player arriving, and show some of the other shamans arriving (maybe even show various methods of transport other than gryphons/wind riders etc. Maybe, say, Nobundo can arrive in a whirlwind! That’d be cool… maybe a bit Windwalker-ish on second thought, but ehh.) Once you touch down, before you can even start to talk to the other shamans, the burning legion attacks! So you go through, and kill the five infernals, and bring down the bat. But before you can get onto of your pillar (which isn’t charged at this point, mind you), the big Felguard dude causes a mass bunch of destruction, knocks all the already disoriented shaman around a bit more, steals Doomhammer, knocks Thrall out and absconds with the Doomhammer down into Deepholm.
You shake your daze off, run over to Thrall who is barely conscious and muttering about losing the Doomhammer. Looking around you notice the other shaman are in dire straits. You go to the ones who are hurt, help them out, and go to the ones trying to build fires who are injured and shaking and the wood isn’t cooperating and they can’t even muster the words for a Flame Shock (it should be clear, I think, that these shaman are -trying- to help themselves but are having a hard time. Not ‘herp derp I forgot that I can cast fire spells and healing spells and lightning spells!). Once you’ve helped the first two, you then go to where Nobundo and Erunak are trying to cast lightning bolts to charge the pillar. They ask for your assistance, and your overcharge and super duper lightning bolt causes the pillar to come alive. (Maybe have this be what opens up the cave in?)
Once you’ve done that, Nobundo calls you down and is all “Hey, mate, I think we need some extra help. Thrall’s still out of it, and we need you to either go help him get his Doomhammer back or try to score one of these amazing other weapons we’ve heard about.” From there, you can pick your spec’s weapon, and then we transition into the Elemental Artifact quest.
So the Elemental artifact quest is pretty… well, terrible. I’m definitely not a fan. But I thought about how that could improve not only on the whole quest itself but also make it feel much better. To start off, Rehgar is all “Hey let’s go to the Temple of the White Tiger, there’s this awesome thing there we can fight for!” and you’re like “um, this sounds weird but ok” and you go to Pandaria.
Once you get there, Xuen runs up to you and tells you that Mogu sorcerors stole the artifact by placing it in some powerful container and they ran away with it. They managed to get one of the thieves and you need to try and work out where they took it. So you go to the thief, purge his mind defenses or something like that, and hex him a couple of times until he tells you they took it to the Throne of Thunder. Xuen tells you to go get it.
Rehgar and you head to the Throne of Thunder and there when you enter you’re in the hallway before the Twin Consort room. You see a string of dead Mogu Sorcerors, and a circle of them around a box that they’re channelling energy into to try and keep it stable. Behind them in the back of the room are the Twin Consorts from the Throne of Thunder raid, both sitting there in an injured pose, at about a quarter of life. They are talking back and forth about their grand plan to use the Fist of Ra’Den to try and ressurect the Thunder King.
We don’t want that to happen, as we want that weapon ourselves, so we aoe the heck out of those sorcerors and kill them all. The Twin Consorts are all ‘oh hell no’ and attack, and if Blizzard is really gun ho on keeping the dual fight with Rehgar going, this would be a great time to have it. You and Rehgar fight the Twin Consorts, and together you defeat them. Then, using your Earthquake Totem, with the advice of Rehgar, you bust open the containment cell and grab the heck outta that fist weapon. However, the room starts to shake and lightning starts to come from out of nowhere and Rehgar’s all “CONTROL THAT THING!” and you’re trying. Once you just about have control over it (maybe with a vehicle thing similar to the Pandaria quest where you had to meditate, but not exactly like it?) a lightning elemental or something similar busts out and you have to defeat it. Or, it could be some sort of Sha like being, perhaps your doubts about being able to control the weapon, I dunno.
You defeat it (Rehgar is unable to help, as he’s in some sort of lightning or earth prison, and this is your fight to win) and then bam! You have this awesome artifact. You return to the Maelstrom, and you find a rather defeated Thrall about the whole Doomhammer not listening to him (and maybe even showing he was hurt a bit, I dunno, and Aggra giving him a serve about being hurt) and then you choose where to quest.
So yeah. That’s my suggestion. I think this would feel more epic in scope rather than ‘hey let’s fight Chen and LiLi for this awesome weapon!”
Thoughts and constructive criticisms welcome. 🙂 This was really a bit of a stream of consciousness as I wrote it and would need heaps of polishing if something similar were to go into game but I feel as an Elemental it’d feel much better. Also apologies for the run on sentences etc – as I said, was stream of conscious-ing while writing this up.
