Ok so as I said previously, I wasn’t sure how much writing I’d be able to do while I was in Bali and frankly our wifi connection was absolutely terrible… so I’m currently on the plane on the way back home to Perth, Western Australia, and I’ll be playing ‘catch up’. I know that we need to write about Wrath, but this week is going to be dedicated to the trip because why the heck not?
Tuesday – 4 March
We left for Bali with very little to no drama. The cab was booked the night before and she showed up on time, we got the cats wrangled and taken care of, and we were off! Our luggage fell under the limits and we got through security and everything quite all right. The husband was enjoying taking pictures of planes as they took off and I was just happy to chill out playing with my phone and both twitter and facebook. We purchased some booze for the big party that was scheduled for Saturday night, and we were a bit turned around in Perth International finding where to pick it up so we were a little delayed getting on the flight – and by delayed I mean we were some of the last to board from the big crush lol.
The flight was fine, I tried to do some writing on the fandoms that I do some fanfiction on, read a bit of Hunger Games fanfiction (I really do like the whole Katniss/Peeta pairing!) and watched some Thundercats 2011 cartoonage which was nice. It was pretty relaxing all up, and when we arrived I was a bit dismayed to see that we had to actually get onto the tarmac. My hair was down and that was my first mistake.
The air in Bali is hot, and humid. The hottest month is apparently March, so gg to me for picking to wear my damned hair down. So sticky getting on the bus that takes us to the terminal, and then my next mistake was deciding that we were going to sit in the back. The back was right over the damned motor so it was extra hot. I was very very glad when we got inside Denpasar airport to where it was nice and icy cool thanks to the air conditioning.
We made it through immigration (25$ and a long line!) and got our luggage, and cleared customs no problem. We ran into some porters who we didn’t quite get the chance to say no to so that cost us some money when they asked for a tip, but we got a cab ride to our ‘home’ for the next few days pretty easily. He actually dropped us off at the wrong one to start with but the staff at that one took us to where ours were (they’re all interconnected apparently). (We stayed at the AP Apartments Inn 2 on Popies 1 in Kuta) We checked in, and the staff was incredibly friendly, giving us icy cold glasses of orange juice while we did our check in. I never tasted something so good before in my life, let me tell you. The air in Bali is that terrible oppressive humid heat that can sometimes just make you feel like every breath you take is one that you fight for. We got checked in and to the elevator that had a wonky weight sensor, and the elevator doors stayed open about 30 seconds before closing on you. That was fun, getting a porter, my husband, and myself plus our bags in the elevator without losing a limb haha! Once we get to about the third floor, we hear my sister in law’s voice echoing down and both of us laughed to each other. “That’s Emma!” we said. Sure enough, the door opens to the 5th floor where we were staying and there’s my mother in law (Juliann), my father in law (Greg), Matt’s aunt and uncle (Evelyn and Allan) and my sister in law and niece (Emma and Alyssa). Matt’s Nana was also there and she was so happy to have her family around, you could tell 🙂 The door to our room is wide open and everyone is joking about how nice the room is and how they’ve already tested out our bed.
Taking a deep breath and having the first glimpse around the area, I was so pleased!! Matt and I got in quick and we rented the penthouse of this little apartment building where we were all going to stay at. The penthouse was right next to the pool, and the only other thing up there was a the poolside bar and function room which was closed up. We got settled in, and well with that pool right there, why wouldn’t you take a quick dip? So a quick swim to refresh ourselves and we met the family at the Kuta Townhouses for dinner. Or, as I like to call it, the Meat Emporium. The restaurant itself boasts that it’s Aussie Brazillian BBQ.
Walking in, it was a little overwhelming, I will admit. Evelyn asked us what our plans were and I must admit I hadn’t thought more other than doing some cursory research the night before we left so I had no idea what I wanted to do other than have a spa day and maybe go snorkelling. At this point we had been on the ground for about an hour and a half, and everyone was meeting and greeting, there were drinks flowing and it was loud and people were shouting suggestions. I fully admit I started to get overwhelmed. I got a drink (Strawberry Vodka slushie thingie) which was ok, but wasn’t something I was really in the mood for at that point. More of Matt’s family showed up, his brother Adam, Adam’s partner Leigh, Matt’s sister Ann, his Aunt Claire and Uncle Bob (who is a yank like me), some of Greg’s cousins that I vaguely recalled meeting at Emma’s wedding a few years back, and Greg’s best mate Ian and his wife Jill. It was loud, and obnoxious, and when we finally decided to eat at the Meat Emporium, it was like meat rained from the sky.
I had never done Brazillian BBQ before but I had seen it from the movie Bridesmaids and I fully admit it was pretty cool. Beef, ham, chicken, pork, lamb… it was all delicious (except for the lamb and pork. I don’t eat lamb and I’m pretty picky about my pork). There were also salads and garlic bread and I think I got the next three months worth of iron for my blood at that meal with the amount of beef sirloin that I had (It was DIVINE). I also had some salad which was quite tasty!
After the Meat Emporium, Ann, Leigh, Matt and myself went upstairs to our room to show it off (because it was pretty swanky, I fully admit it) and then I jumped back in the pool for a bit. Juliann came up and swam with Matt and I for a bit and that was Day 1 in Bali. I couldn’t wait to start to organize Day 2!!
