I just spent a fair bit of time looking around the internet for the inspiration pictures that I used to use for Xyen’s character and I couldn’t find them, sigh. Very sad I am.
That being said, I’m here to tell you about the terrible trio, Xyen, Calenia and Lia. I’m going to start with Xyen first, as she’s the ‘eldest’ of the trio, and the first one I created when I did RP back on the Evernight/Monarchy boards in Maxim/Mo’pri. I’ll be following this up with Calenia tomorrow and Lia on Saturday… I forgot how much I loved these girls. I might have to expand on their world again 😉
Xyen was born to a minor nobleman and his wife of a small lake town. They were no one of consequence, except for the fact that a Sorceress had fallen deeply in lust with the nobleman. She cursed the wife of the nobleman that all children she carried would be cursed.
After Xyen’s birth, her skin flaked and began to get scaly. No one understood why, and when they went to bathe the baby in case of an irritation on her skin, the baby’s legs began to transform and form into a tail. A tail with shiny scales, blue and green, purple and teal accents. Pulling the baby out of the bath, as soon as her tail dried off, it returned to legs. And a few hours later, the little girl had the flaky, scaly skin.
Throughout Xyen’s childhood, her mother and father did everything they could to cure the merwoman. Eventually, the only thing they found to keep the curse at bay was to indulge it… let the little girl spend as much as four hours a day in water, and she could function throughout the rest of the day. They swore their servants to secrecy, afraid that the townspeople they ruled over would kill their daughter. They swore to never have another child.
As she reached adolescence, Xyen began to show signs of magic. Fearful for their daughter’s safety they shipped her off to a circle of magi in a distant land, with instructions that she needed her ‘extra long’ baths. When Xyen arrived, the circle of magi denied her the baths for many days until her skin began to flake off at an alarming rate, and she began to dehydrate rapidly. A maid was attempting to bathe the sick young girl when she noticed that the skin repaired itself around water. They bathed Xyen and discovered her secret: she was a merwoman.
Instead of kicking her out of the circle, they were entranced by the young budding sorceress, and her natural affinity towards water and ice based magicks. She often was sent into the local rivers and lakes to find the more dangerous components for spellwork. It was during one of these trips that she scraped her tail against a fungal rock. The fungus crept into the wound, but with a quick healing spell, Xyen and the circle didn’t think about it again.
However, the damage had been done. The scales around where the wound had been began to blacken and mould. Before long, when Xyen was in the water her tail scales were diseased and fungal. Then, the unthinkable happened…
Her scales began to grow when she was out of the water. Soon she was covered head to toe in blackened and rotting scales, her hair having fallen out due to the scale rot. Given provisions, she was cast out from the circle finally, and told to go find a cure before returning. She either would return, or not.
During her travels, Xyen was attacked by bandits. She used her magic to protect herself, but one of the bandits had managed to get behind her defences and was preparing to kill the sorceress when she was rescued by a whirling dervish of a woman in black leathers. Black hair, almond shaped amber eyes, and a series of scars criss crossing down her arms marked the woman as a Blademistress. She introduced herself as Calenia Meriane, and offered her services to the scaled Merwoman.
The duo were in an inn in some town or another, following one of the leads that Xyen was chasing when an intruder snuck into their room one night. Calenia, ever the light sleeper, caught the intruder and prepared to execute them when Xyen stopped her. Mossy green eyes, and flaming red hair greeted Xyen, and she felt a shock of recognition. This woman was going to be the one who would lead her to the cure… this Lia Moonflower…
